So, much of trash is being thrown at Miley Cyrus for her this year’s VMA performance. But, didn’t she just act like her male counterparts? If they aren’t targeted, then why paint a bull’s eyes on Miley’s ass?
I wonder what is it that shocked us most? The act? Or, the fact that it was a girl’s act?
News, social networks, coffee chats, everything is echoing with the shock, dismay, disgust & approbation for Miley’s performance. Why? Because our beloved Hannah Montanna stopped pretending that she’s a living doll?
Don’t get me wrong, her teddy bear twerking performance was bizarre. However, more bizarre are the reactions to it.
Respected media like The Mail & Globe published a mocking obituary for her. Morning shows called her ‘disturbed’. Brooke Shields labels her as ‘desperate’. It drove to more than 300,000 tweets per minute on Twitter & most of them are jibes.
A girl has tweeted this “Miley Cyrus needs to do this” along with the following picture
So we are angry at a girl for objectifying women on stage & this rage we show by objectifying her?
Yes, she gyrated against someone on stage. Yes, she used women as props and accessories. But, aren’t these very common in American music videos. Is’t it visibly more prominent in the performances of male pop stars?
Yet, I say criticize her. As much as you like. Criticize her as an artist or a performer but don’t criticize her as a girl. Linking our criticism with Miley’s gender is as appalling as the performance itself.
Amid all these we forget to read between the lines. Could Miley’s performance be something more than a teddy twearking act?
We all saw how Miley & Thicke performed on a medley of Miley’s ‘We can’t stop’ & Thicke’s ‘Blurred lines’. We all saw Miley gyrating against Thicke. All this was so overwhelming that we forgot to think.
‘Blurred Lines’ is accused of treating women like objects. While, Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ promotes rape culture with its “I know you want it” hook, physical aggression, and subtle messages about alcohol and consent. Miley’s ‘We can’t stop it’ says:
“It’s our party we can do what we want
It’s our party we can say what we want
It’s our party we can love who we want
We can kiss who we want
We can see who we want
To my home girls here with the big butt
Shaking it like we at a strip club
Remember only God can judge ya
Forget the haters cause somebody loves ya
And everyone in line in the bathroom
Trying to get a line in the bathroom
We all so turned up here
Getting turned up, yeah, yeah”
She tried to fight back to the male chauvinism. She failed miserably & how. It’s ironical that Miley’s distasteful but still a commentary against double standards, made her a victim of double standards.
Yes Miley was cocky, brash & lewd. Last night, she acted like a man on stage & got damned like a woman. Just like many men of American music industry Miley was brazen in her power display & unapologetic. I appreciate that people are able to differentiate between sexiness & sexualization. I just wonder that where does this discretion go, when it comes to the performances of top billed male stars? But unlike men, she ended up disturbing people. So, does that mean unlike men, we women are unworthy of self expression?
Still, I say, go ahead, criticize Miley Cyrus. And then use the same decry when male popstar performs in this fashion. What Miley Cyrus did was odd, distasteful, racist & un-artistic, but it’s unfair to label her as ‘slut’ for that.
And, now am taking this as an excuse to remind myself how & when I started liking Miley Cyrus.
